Meadville vs. PINE RICHLAND RAMS - Monday, 3/10/2008
Meadville: 1
PINE RICHLAND RAMS: 5
Game Report:
AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED…

The Meadville Bulldogs - who have been skating through adversity all season long – faced their 2nd defending state champion in the semi-final game for the Penguin Cup; and this one was just too good.

The Pine Richland Rams have the air of an all-star team, and the Saads and Trombettas and Loneys – they are as good as advertised.

But the Meadville Bulldogs showed the heart that is instilled and bred and practiced into them by legendary coach Jamie Plunkett; and they fought the good fight.

It was a wonderful atmosphere at the Mellon Arena. The Meadville fans, hampered a bit by the 5PM start, still showed up in force. The boys earned their right to play on the “Big” ice - earned it by trudging through the 47-game, 5-tournament schedule – then rising up and elevating their game just at the right time heading into the play-offs. Just when you're supposed to.

The 1st period was incredible. Shaking off any pre-game nerves the Dogs came out hitting. Their intensity may have caught the un-defeated Rams off-guard a bit as well.

Meadville actually out-shot 8-7 in the 1st and created several very real scoring chances in front. The PR goalie was giving up some rebounds. But the disciplined Rams kept their cool and cleared away the traffic and the puck whenever it got hot in front.
Brian Danczak was stellar in net for Meadville, taking on all comers, including a couple breakaways by the vaunted Ram forwards.
The 1-4 was working as practiced.

The 2nd period was all-Ram.
Out-shooting the Bulldogs a ridiculous 17-2, Pine Richland shifted into another gear altogether.
Freshman defenseman Brandon Saad is the real-deal – and when on the ice with his brother George and Dylan Trombetta, the Dogs were seeing some of the best hockey players they’ve seen all year.
PR scored on a pretty wrister at 13:10 then came right back at 12:38 and shoved a Bulldog turnover right down our throat.
But Meadville was not going to roll over.
In fact, the Dogs killed off a 5 on 3, then finished off the power-play as the period wound down.
Meadville did try valiantly to create scoring opportunities but the Pine Richland back-checking was simply outstanding.

You could easily make the argument that is was the difference in the game.

Danczak stopped 15/17 in the period but the dam was now leaking and the Bulldogs were looking a bit worn for the wear of the onslaught.
The Dogs continued to hit, though.

The Saad/Trombeta line opened the 3rd with another powerful drive-pass-shot that hit.
They went up 4-0 half-way through and kept that lead before Billy Espy cracked home a nice slapped on a drive down the right slot. Espy deserved the point as he worked his rear-end off all game long. Zack Allegretti and Aaron Nye got the assists.
The goal came with under a minute to play and gave the faithful their cheer – but PR bounced right back and made it a 5-1 final.

Game Notes:
>Having the entire team introduced on the Mellon Arena ice was a kick for all.
>Morgan Nickerson gave everything he had. Reaching deep into his magic bag and creating scoring opportunities when none seemed possible.
>16 shots-on will rarely be enough – the PR back-check and puck control was stifling.
>The turnover ratio, which has plagued the team all year long, was a definite factor.
>The Bulldog power-play was in effect - ineffective. Pine Richland’s speed and experience mitigated any momentum.
>The Bulldogs out-hit the Rams 10-5 and at times, had them looking at the refs for help.
>Brandon Magee just punishes the opposition. Fedorka, Torok, Learn and Nickerson got in their shots as well.

SEASON WRAP-UP.
With the loss of the Class of 2007, the uncertainty of Morgan’s return and the influx of eight (8) “rookies” – the season began with Coach Plunkett’s commitment to patience and education. Jamie may have spent as much time “teaching” this year as he ever has.

The team also was slow to gain traction because of the absence of a slew of athletes participating in other sports. Plunkett’s understanding and acceptance of these commitments is exemplary.

But the team came out strong regardless; going 4-1 in PIHL games before losing Billy and the tie at Norwin. That game and injury kind of knocked the skates off for bit. The longest losing streak came shortly thereafter in December (5) around the Jamestown Tourney. But after that the boys only lost two (2) in a row one more time and that was at the highly competitive Bulldog Invitational. Of course the team saved the longest winning streak of the year for the run up, and into the play-offs – seven (7).

There are no pity-parties held in Bulldog Country, but if any team faced the level of adversity that this one did, it would be amazing. Senior Zack Allegretti is mugged by McDowell and is lost to a separated shoulder. Junior Chip Ray is cracking slappers in practice and suffers a most fluky, yet devastating knee injury. And Sophomore Billy Espy breaks his leg going into the boards in Delmont. There are three (3) kids who had worked into the top lines out at the same time. Then Senior Captain Morgan Nickerson gets whistled for a two (2) game penalty and misses virtually three (3) more on another call that Bulldogs fans will always call questionable. And he still broke the single-season scoring record and led the PIHL in goals scored and total points in six (6) less games than most of his peer-competitors played.

btw – Nick Fedorka finishes 4th and Drew Finton finishes 9th as the Dogs place three (3) in the top ten; and as a team finished 2nd overall in goals scored in the PIHL.

The 7-seed in the play-offs was tough to swallow, but that hole had been dug. The drive to make the “Frozen Four” by beating defending state champs North Allegheny showed the character of this team.

Fifty (50) games - 27 wins, 19 losses and 4 ties.

The Captains were leaders and the Seniors stepped up.

Fights fought, lessons learned, characters built.
