Meadville vs. Bethel Park - Monday, 2/19/2007 Meadville: 4 Bethel Park: 2 Game Report: BLACK DOG CUP BETHEL PARK VS MEADVILLE The 7th annual “Black Dog Cup” game was played for charity at Bethel Park Bladerunners with Meadville prevailing in the contest by winning 4-2. It was Meadville’s 5th win in 7 years as the Cup made the trip north on 79 to rest for another year at “The House of Chills.” From Meadville’s perspective, the game could be summed up as a total team effort as the Bulldogs played a spirited brand of hockey throughout the game against one of the best teams in the state of Pennsylvania. The game was well played by both teams as Bethel ended the game with a 23-16 shot advantage as both teams demonstrated their skill and quick puck movement into and out of their respective zones. Meadville goaltender Mike Liscinski was up to the task as he stopped several quality chances, particularly in the 3rd period and when the Dogs were busy killing penalties. Bethel scored just 49 seconds into the contest on a bad line change by the Dogs but it didn’t seem to rattle the Dogs as they went back to work with a lot of hockey left to play. At 9:14 Captain Mike Noonan took advantage of a nice play Killmeyer made to get the puck out of the zone creating a 2-1 with O’Shurak. As O’Shurak drove hard to the net, Noonan looked him off and snapped one in tying the game at 1. The Dogs failed to convert on 2 power play opportunities and with about 5 minutes left in the first, Meadville lost a BP player in front who made a pretty backhand goal off the crossbar…2-1 BP. Meadville ended the period killing off is own penalty and the shots were 8-7 Bethel with the score 2-1. In the second period, both teams played a lot in the neutral zone until freshman Kyle Learn made a nice clearing play to Nickerson. Nickerson made a slick move around the BP defenseman and went in 2-1 with Noonan. Noonan went hard to the net and Nickerson fired a quick snapshot beating the BP tender and tying the game …2-2. Meadville got into penalty trouble and killed off another power play, but with 1:52 remaining in the 2nd period, Nickerson stripped the puck and scored the eventual game winner shorthanded on a pretty deke past the BP netminder. 3-2. SOG BP 8+7=15, Meadville 7+5=12 after 2 periods. Bethel responded in the third with a sense of urgency and intensity but the Dogs Defense rallied with several smart plays of its own and Liscinski made the big save at the 9:54 mark. Nye, Allegretti, Peterson, Killmeyer and Learn played well down the stretch, each making plays when it counted the most. As the clock ticked down, the Dogs took a fateful penalty with 2:20 remaining and Bethel would have an opportunity to tie the game with a 2 man advantage if they pulled their goalie. Meadville was able to keep the puck in the Bethel end for some time keeping the tender on the ice until about 1 minute left in the contest. Down 2 men, Bethel had some great opportunities but Liscinski was not going to let this one slip away. With about 36 seconds left, Morgan Nickerson used his long reach and soft hands to pick off a pass at the Bethel Blue line and slid one into the empty net sealing the Blackhawks fate. 4-2 Bethel outshot Meadville 8-4 in the final period, and 23-16 for the game. The Dogs are back in league action vs Shaler and then end the regular season with Mt. Lebanon. Proceeds fron the Black Dog Cup were donated to local charities. |
