DOGS WIN 4-1..SENIOR ASSISTANT CAPTAIN TYLER LEARN LEADS THE DOGS WITH 2 GOALS, SENIOR EVAN WISINSKI AND PAT LEONE EACH HAD A GOAL IN THE FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME. GAME REPORT...MEADVILLE PA It was senior night for the Dogs and seniors Evan Wisinski and Tyler Learn made sure the Dogs ended the regular season on a high note. Wisinski tallied first for the Dogs on a nice backhand at the 9:33 mark off the faceoff from Fedorka. 1-0 Meadville. At 5:50 Tyler Learn got the game winner when he streaked down the slot and picked his spot for his first goal of the night. Morgan Nickerson forechecked into the corner and with a big hit, bounced the McDowell player off the puck and made a nice feed to Learn who buried it..Nye got the assist...2-0 Meadville. Danczak put on the "show" at 4:15 stoning a big breakaway attempt....firing up the Dogs and keeping the Trojans off the board. The Dogs dominate the Trojans outshooting them 17-2 in the first. It only took sniper Pat Leone 14 seconds in the 2nd period to create some distance with the games backbreaker. Leone took a perfect feed from a hardworking Tyler Learn and put it in the back of the net for the Dogs' 3rd goal. McDowell got an easy chance when on the power play 2 Meadville players collided and McDowell scored shorthand on the breakaway....3-1 at the end of 2 periods...shots on goal:Meadville 31 McDowell 7. Meadville controlled the third and McDowell took some very poor penalties and never really threatened. Tyler Learn apparently didn't want senior night to end as he teamed up with Nickerson again for the Dogs final goal. Nickerson went through to men down the left wing and made a "sick" pass to T. Learn in front..Learn redirected it for his 3 point of the evening and a very impressive Senior effort. Final Shots on goal 38-12. Meadville closes out PIHL schedule with win over Trojans By Dominick DiRienzo, THE MEADVILLE TRIBUNE 02/28/06 — As a member of the 2003 Meadville team that won the state title, Tyler Learn knows what it takes to be successful in the playoffs. The Bulldog senior scored twice and assisted on a third goal to help keep Meadville unbeaten in its last 14 games with a 4-1 win over McDowell at DeArment Ice Arena on Monday in Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League action. "We are trying to build some momentum for the playoffs and carry that through," Learn said. With the win, Meadville (36-11-2 overall, 19-3 PIHL) secures the second seed, a first-round bye and a quarterfinal home game. The second seed also gives Meadville a chance to avoid a date with Mt. Lebanon (21-0) until the Penguin Cup championship if both teams should advance that far. "We've come a long way since last year," Learn said. Meadville scored 148 goals last year, had to battle to earn the eighth seed for the playoffs and was eliminated in the second round. This year they have scored 249 goals. Morgan Nickerson assisted on both of Learn's goals, raising his point total to a team-high 91, a year after he led the Bulldogs in scoring as a freshman. Evan Wisinski gave Meadville a 1-0 lead with 9:44 left in the first period. Learn doubled the lead four minutes later. "(Morgan Nickerson) was working behind the net. I just came down the slot and Nickerson hit me on the tape, and I redirected it," Learn said. McDowell nearly scored with 1:07 left in the first period. Nick Disanti beat Meadville goalie Bryan Danczak with a backhander, but the puck hit the post. It did not take long for Meadville to pad its lead. Just 14 seconds into the second period, Pat Leone took a pass from Learn and pushed it past McDowell goalie John Cleary's stick side. McDowell's Ed Maras kept the Trojans (13-8-1) alive scoring on a shorthanded breakaway with 8:05 left in the game to make the score 3-1. Maras' goal in the second period was the only goal Danczak gave up against McDowell in 135 minutes of hockey. "When it was 3-0, they didn't quit," Plunkett said. McDowell goalie John Cleary kept the Trojans within striking distance. He made 34 saves on 38 shots including seven saves during a three-minute span late in the second period when the Trojans had two players in the penalty box. "Cleary blocked us there," Plunkett said. "If we get a goal or two there, it's a different game." The Bulldogs did push one past Cleary during the 5-on-3, but the goal was waved off because the referee ruled the net was off its moorings. "We took some terrible penalties," McDowell coach Paul Mancini said. "Selfish little penalties that really hurt the team." While Meadville did not capitalize on the power play, they did wear the Trojans down. "We just didn't have much gas left in the tank after killing those penalties," Mancini said. Learn delivered the knockout blow with 23 seconds left in the game, again taking a pass from Nickerson to make it 4-1. It is Meadville's third straight win against McDowell. The Bulldogs outscored the Trojans 14-1 in those three games. "We needed to come in, get a win and take care of what we needed to do," Danczak said. Meadville's unbeaten streak has reached 14 games (13-0-1), and the Bulldogs are 7-0 in their last seven home games. Meadville's last loss was Jan. 19 against Bethel Park. The loss to the Blackhawks culminated a 1-4-1 stretch in mid-January. Notes: By clinching the second seed and a first-round bye, Meadville is officially off until March 9. That is when the Bulldogs are scheduled to play their first playoff game. But Plunkett said the Bulldogs might play Jamestown on Saturday in a nonleague game. Plunkett said he will make that decision today. ... Tyler Learn reached the 40-point mark with his three points. .. McDowell took 10 penalties. ... Meadville had already beaten McDowell twice this season 6-0 and 4-0. ... Meadville outshot McDowell 38-12. "We probably missed the net 10 or 12 times," Mancini said. |
