Bulldogs surprise North Allegheny By Dominick DiRienzo 02/07/06 — The shot might not have been "anything special" but the result sure was. Zane O'Shurak scored on a slapshot from just inside the blueline to help lift Meadville to a 3-1 win over North Allegheny in Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League action Monday at DeArment Ice Arena. The Bulldogs' win coupled with Mount Lebanon's 2-0 win over Bethel Park means Meadville has the inside line on the second seed for the upcoming PIHL playoffs. "It wasn't anything special. I was just trying to put the puck on net and hope one of the forwards could tip it in," O'Shurak said. "This was a beautiful win. We needed those two points." Meadville has six remaining PIHL games against teams with a combined 38-48-1 record. The Bulldogs are back on the ice at 8:15 p.m. tonight against Erie Cathedral Prep. "Zane O'Shurak and Aaron Nye played their best games of the season," Meadville coach Jamie Plunkett said. That's a huge win for us." It was unclear whether O'Shurak was even going to play in the game. "He dinged his knee in practice, but he skated and said he felt good," Plunkett said. Meadville (14-3 PIHL) dealt North Allegheny (17-3) its third league loss of the year. Meadville now owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Tigers, who have just two PIHL games remaining. North Allegheny's Wes Waldschmidt gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with 14:24 left in the second period. The forward picked up his own rebound and poked it through Meadville goalie Bryan Danczak's pads 36 seconds into the period. Meadville tied the a little over five minutes later. Casey Rogers poked home a loos puck on the North Allegheny goaltender Max Richards glove side with 8:46 left in the second period to tie the score 1-1. The third period was scoreless until the 4:20 mark, when O'Shurak picked up just his third goal of the season. "I'm not a goal scorer. I was just trying to put it on net," O'Shurak said. "(Meadville forward) Alex Drelick set a beautiful screen for me." Meadville's Mike Noonan iced the game with 28.7 seconds left, scoring off assists from Drelick and Luke Killmeyer. Both Drelick and Killmeyer finished with two assists. "This is a huge win for us," Plunkett said. "(North Allegheny) is a good hockey club. I was a little nervous, but I was pleased with our effort." |
