ERIE PREP TONIGHT - Monday, 2/13/2006

Bulldogs face Prep

By Dominick DiRienzo
Feb. 13 —
Cathedral Prep does not have an intimidating record or playoff seeding, but they do have something else that makes opponents nervous this time of year — good goaltending.

Meadville won the last meeting with Cathedral Prep six days ago, 3-1.

"(Goalie Jon Boros) played very well," Meadville coach Jamie Plunkett said. "At this time of year, a goaltender can keep you in games."

The Ramblers (8-10 PIHL) are the 11th seed for the upcoming Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League playoffs, but they have four league games remaining. The first is at 7:30 tonight at DeArment Ice Arena against the Bulldogs.

Against Meadville, Boros stopped 47 of 50 shots.

The Ramblers are coming off a 6-2 loss to Plum on Thursday. Prep goaltender John Mioduszewski stopped 28 of 34 shots against Plum.

So far this season the two have spilt time in goal, with Mioduszewski earning a bid to the PIHL all-star team and Boros picking up all-tournament honors at the Gilmour (Ohio) Tournament.

"We have two very good goalies," said Prep coach Pete McCormick, who played for the Ramblers from 1980-84. "We've been called goaltender university. We rely on our goaltenders. That's not a secret."

Last year Prep netminder Ryan Zapolski set a PIHL record when he made 88 saves in a 5-0 loss to Bethel Park.

While Prep needs this game to stay in the hunt for the postseason, Meadville is looking to maintain its grip on the inside tack for the second seed and a first-round bye.

And for Meadville (32-11-1, 16-3 PIHL), goaltending is also a good place to start.

Sophomore Bryan Danczak has stopped 90 percent of the shots he's faced and has a goals against average of barely over two (2.08 GAA).

"When (Danczak) is on the ice, Meadville's tough to score against," McCormick said.

But McCormick said Meadville has another difference-maker who doesn't always draw a lot of attention: Brian Stanton. The Bulldogs' senior defenseman has nine goals and 19 assists and is a plus-46.

"Stanton is an outstanding defenseman," McCormick said. "He handles the puck well, and, defensively, he's just tough to get around. There are a few players in the league you can call a difference maker and he would be one of them.

"Meadville is tough top to bottom."

Stanton and Chris Learn, who leads the team with a plus-52, are the top defensive pairing with Zane O'Shurak, Daniel Allegretti and Aaron Nye splitting the remaining shifts.

Plunkett said he will stick with five defensemen and 13 forwards since the return of forward Nick Fedorka and the continued outstanding play of Luke Killmeyer, who was moved from defense to forward to replace Fedorka.

Fedorka, who had been out with a knew injury, saw his first action in 10 games in Friday's 9-0 win over Norwin. During Meadville's 2003 state title run, Plunkett used a lineup of 13 forwards and five defensemen.

"That's the lineup we'll use for the foreseeable future," Plunkett said. "I like what Luke is doing up front. He's an aggressive kid. He gives us some energy."

Plunkett also has moved Killmeyer to the power play unit.

In the last nine games, all wins, Meadville has scored 59 goals. It is a resurgence for a Meadville offense that struggled to score last season. A season after scoring 148 goals, Meadville has 226 goals this season.

Leading the way is sophomore Morgan Nickerson (40 goals, 43 assists). Pat Leone is second (28 goals, 32 assists), further bolstering the offense is the emergence of Mike Noonan, who had 14 points last season, but is third this year with 57 points (23 goals, 34 assists).

In attempt to slow down the 'Dogs' offense in the last meeting, Cathedral Prep played a 1-2-2 trap defense.

"We're going to do our best to win the game," McCormick said. "But I'd rather not reveal anything. As far as the 1-2-2 goes, they might see it again. But we will have to make quick changes, because coach Plunkett is so good at making quick changes
