BULLDOGS POWER PLAY FOR PREVENTION - Thursday, 2/9/2006 Bulldogs score to fund a cure Jean Shanley 02/09/06 — Delicate pink ribbons aren't part of the Meadville Bulldog Hockey team's uniforms of black and red. But they are definitely on the minds of the 'Dogs supporters every time the team scores a power play goal — because each one means another $102 will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The pink ribbon is the foundation's symbol for the fight against breast cancer, and local businesses and individuals have pledged $102 for each power play goal. So far this season, the team has scored 31 power play points — which translates to $3,162 for the foundation. In addition, the team plans to donate the proceeds from admissions to the Bethel Park/Black Dog Cup game of $300, bringing the total to nearly $3,500 with a month left to make more power play goals, obtain more pledges and add to the project. Coach Jamie Plunkett estimated the team will score between 40 and 50 power play goals this season. "I never thought it would be this big. It's cool to be part of," said captain and defenseman Brian Stanton, who organized the fundraiser with goaltender Mike Macielak as a joint senior project. A senior project is a statewide requirement for graduation from high school. The idea for a fundraiser dates back to started September 2005 when Plunkett received a flier from his school, Cornell University, where the hockey team raised money by obtaining pledges for each power play goal. Stanton and Macielak investigated the possibility of finding a major sponsor and Northwest Savings Bank took the lead pledge of $50 per power play goal. Plunkett said the significance in selecting the foundation is that many of the team's friends and family members have been affected by cancer, which brought the cause close to home. "It's just so important because on my mother's side of the family, some of her family members died from cancer. I was too young (at the time) to understand," Stanton said. He's excited about the success of the project so far, noting he thinks it is something the team could build on over the years. Plunkett said the response from the community has been good, but the word is still getting out. "Hopefully publicity in the community might alert some people to what we're doing," Plunkett said, adding he hopes the response will be even better as they head into the final month of play. This isn't the first effort the team has made to give back to the community. A few years ago the team did a book drive for the Fairview-Fairmont public housing project. Plunkett said for some teams it's difficult to score a power play goal and "I would put our team in that classification." He explained that a power play happens when an opponent takes a penalty. Because of the penalty, the opponent plays shorthanded for the length of the penalty, usually two minutes. Although there is a manpower advantage to the team without the penalty, the team only has a limited time to score. He said the success rate for most teams is 20 to 25 percent. A year ago the Bulldogs' success rate on power play goals was 14 percent, but this year it's about 25 to 26 percent. |
