A Special Thank You To Dr. Dennie Finton
It is with great pleasure that the Bulldog Hockey program recognizes Dr. Dennie Finton for his many years of service and dedication to the hockey team. During my 25 plus years with Bulldog Hockey, I have been fortunate to have been associated with some of the most dedicated and supportive individuals. When I think of an individual who has gone above and beyond – the name Dennie Finton comes to mind almost immediately. As a former president of CCYHA, Dennie has been involved with hockey in Meadville for over fifteen years.
Dennie’s countless contributions are too numerous to list and I would probably forget several. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a few – beginning with the SkyBox . Dennie not only donated money for the SkyBox – he donated his time by painting and cleaning the area.
As Vice President of the Bulldog Hockey Board, Dennie was the liaison to the PIHL and attended monthly meetings in Pittsburgh throughout the hockey season for four years – a thankless job that he undertook and made my life easier in dealing with the PIHL executive board. I think the only individual who was at the rink more than me during Drew Finton’s four years on the team was Dennie. The Bulldog Hockey Locker room is a special place for the countless number of hockey players who have played for the team. Dennie made sure the dressing room was kept in immaculate condition. In 2008, Dennie oversaw a major renovation of the dressing room along with Doug Lang and Dick Holabaugh. The changes that Dennie initiated were outstanding and no task or detail was too small for Dennie to take on. Whatever needed to be done, Dennie was always the first individual to ask “what can I do and how can I help”.
In addition to donating his time, Dennie has been generous in his donations to the golf outing as a major sponsor, purchasing items for the dressing room and the Bulldog Hockey Invitational tournament. Hockey in Meadville is special because of individuals like Dennie Finton. Our children are the main reason we get involved with activities such as hockey. Dennie Finton made CCYHA and Bulldog Hockey better because of his dedication to his children and countless other children throughout his tenure. There is a saying that you don’t appreciate something until it is gone. Those words were never more true than when Dennie Finton stepped aside as vice president of Bulldog Hockey.
Thank you my friend for all that you have and continue to do for hockey in Meadville.
Sincerely,
Jamie Plunkett

PITTSBURGH — It may have ended in a loss, but it was still a one-of-a-kind experience for the Meadville Bulldogs hockey team, which took on Bethel Park under the inky black night sky of Pittsburgh on Wednesday at the Penguins Pond, a special outdoor rink set up in the ’Burgh’s South Side neighborhood.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Bulldogs defenseman Garrett Hope. “It was really different. It’s not what you’re used to, being outside, seeing the sky above you.”
Bethel Park won the game 4-1, tallying three goals late in the third period to break a 1-1 tie.
That snapped a three-game win streak for the Bulldogs (12-8-2). And there was some frustration afterward. But otherwise, the team enjoyed a unique night out.
“I think the kids had a really good time,” said Meadville head coach Jamie Plunkett. “And it was a good game. I thought we played well in stretches. I wasn’t displeased with the effort. ... We made a couple mistakes and (Bethel Park) capitalized on them.”
The rain that hit the city of Meadville on Wednesday was held at bay down in Pittsburgh during the evening, enabling the Bulldogs (and Meadville’s JV team, which lost to Pine-Richland 7-2 on Wednesday at the same venue) to get the game in.
“It was awesome to be able to play outside,” said Bethel Park coach Jim McVay. “And obviously we had to bring Meadville down for the opportunity. They’re such a big rival of ours and I’ve known Jamie for a long time.
“I told Jamie,” McVay added, “as long as it isn’t pouring down rain we were playing. And we got lucky with that.”
The night wasn’t without its issues, of course. Visibility for the spectators was one of them. Condensation played havoc with the glass boards, making them nearly opaque throughout the first two periods. It cleared up by the third period, though.
And with it being a wet day and fairly warm for the middle of December, the ice wasn’t perfect.
“It was a little rough on the edges,” said Hope. “Just not real smooth. There was snow in the corners. You had to pass the puck extra hard.”
Yet, the ice didn’t seem to have an affect on one team more than the other. Bethel Park simply had better opportunities and made them count.
The Blackhawks got on the board around five minutes into the first period on a goal by Dylan Jones.
But Meadville tied it up when Hope struck on a power play midway through the second, rifling a slap shot in from the point.
“Austin Scott had a nice pass from the corner,” said Hope. “He passed it to Chris Allegretti. Chris passed it across to me. It was a slap shot, top shelf.”
That’s how the score would remain until there was about four minutes left in the third period. Jones found himself one-on-one with Meadville goalie Eric Shilling and slipped one past him.
The Blackhawks’ Jake Worcester then scored on an empty netter soon after, making it 3-1. And Bryan Brown deflected in the final goal with just two seconds remaining.
“I thought it was a great time,” said McVay. “It was a great atmosphere. I know the players enjoyed themselves, at least I think they did. ... And it always good to get a win.”

Coach’s Corner
As we move in to the month of December, it is hard to believe that a third of the season is over already. We currently sit at 8-6-2 overall and if I had one word to describe our play this far – it would be inconsistent. There have been times when we appear to be heading in the right direction, only to take a couple of steps backwards.
